An Investigation of Disgust During Pregnancy
You are asked to participate
in a voluntary research study conducted by Daniel M.T. Fessler, Ph.D., Assistant
Professor, from the Anthropology Department at the University of California,
Los Angeles. You are a possible participant if you are:
-Female
-At least 18 years of age
-Currently pregnant
-Healthy - not suffering from any chronic medical conditions
-Not currently taking any prescription medications
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study is to learn the relationship between pregnancy and
reactions to potentially disgusting stimuli.
PROCEDURES
If you volunteer to participate in this study, we would ask you to complete
a survey. You would be asked to indicate the date on which you began your pregnancy,
and to report any symptoms of morning sickness (nausea and vomiting) which you
have experienced. You would also be asked about whether you have been pregnant
before, your general health, body weight, and use of medications. You would
be asked to imagine your response to certain events. Some people may find some
of the imaginary scenarios disturbing; others may be less bothered by these
scenarios, or may find them amusing. The total length of time for completion
of the survey is approximately 5 minutes.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
No potential risks or discomforts are anticipated.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO SUBJECTS
AND/OR TO SOCIETY
You will not benefit from your participation in this study; however, if you
would like to learn about the final results of this investigation, you will
be able to refer to the author’s web site at http://www.sscnet.ucla.edu/anthro/faculty/fessler/
to learn more following completion of this research. Society may benefit from
a greater understanding of the effects of pregnancy on emotional experience,
as this may influence a wide range of decision facing pregnant women; health
care professionals would be better able to advise their clients if they can
provide information about alterations in this feature.
PAYMENT FOR PARTICIPATION
You will not be paid for your participation in this research study.
CONFIDENTIALITY
This study is entirely anonymous - no identifying information will be collected
about you or the Internet service provider through which you are accessing this
web site.
PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
This study is entirely voluntary. If you volunteer to be in this study, you
may end your participation at any time without consequences of any kind. You
may end your participation by either rerouting your web browser to another website
or closing your web browser. You may also refuse to answer any questions you
do not want to answer and still remain in the study.
